چکیده
Atom is a powerful platform for the implementation of prooling, debugging and simulation tools. Kernel support in ATOM makes it possible to implement similar tools for the Digital UNIX kernel. We describe four non-trivial Atom kernel tools which demonstrate the support provided in Atom for kernel work as well as the range of application of Atom kernel tools. We go on to discuss some techniques that are generally useful when using Atom with the kernel. Prior techniques restrict kernel measurements to the domain of exotic systems research. We hope Atom technology will make kernel instrumentation and measurement practical for a much larger community of researchers.

Techniques for Identifying Elusive Corner-Case Bugs in Systems Software
Modern software is plagued by elusive corner-case bugs (e.g., security vulnerabilities). There are no scalable, automated ways of finding them, therefore such bugs can remain hidden until software is deployed in production. This thesis proposes approaches to solve this problem. First, we present black-box and white-box fault injection mechanisms, which allow developers to test the behavior of t...
متن کاملA Design for Comprehensive Kernel Instrumentation
Dynamic binary instrumentation (DBI) has been used extensively at the user level to develop bug-finding and security tools, such as Memcheck and Program Shepherding. However, comprehensive DBI frameworks do not exist for operating system kernels, thwarting the development of dependability and security tools for kernels. In this paper, we identify the key challenges in designing an in-kernel DBI...
متن کاملInSight: A Framework for Application Diagnosis using Virtual Machine Record and Replay
Non-deterministic execution poses several challenges toward diagnosis—debugging, profiling and execution state mining, of software systems (user-level applications and operating systems). While several techniques using modified libraries, library wrappers, binary instrumentation and memory shadowing techniques exist, we aim to exploit the record and replay technique enabled by virtualization to...
متن کاملLooking Inside Memory Tooling for tracing memory reference patterns
Memory is a critical resource that is non-renewable and is time consuming to regenerate by reclaim. While there are several tools available to understand the amount of memory utilized by an application, there is presently little infrastructure to capture the physical memory reference pattern of an application on a live system. This knowledge would enable the software developers and hardware des...
متن کاملSASSIFI: Evaluating Resilience of GPU Applications
As GPUs become more pervasive in both scalable high-performance computing systems and safety-critical embedded systems, evaluating and analyzing their resilience will grow increasingly important. As soft errors, such as those caused by high-energy particle strikes, form an important fraction of in-field hardware errors, GPU designers must develop tools and techniques to understand the effect of...
